PAIRN, in collaboration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA), is responsible for negotiating the Collective Agreement with the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association representing Eastern Health (teaching hospitals).

The purpose of the Agreement is to set forth certain terms and employment conditions for Residents, while maintaining a mutually beneficial relationship between the Employer and PAIRN members.

The negotiating team works diligently to improve salaries and other benefits of your contract to achieve parity with other provinces.

The Collective Agreement also ensures the personal well-being of members while maintaining excellence in patient care. PAIRN continues to strive for improved salaries, working conditions and educational environments for all members.

PAIRN representatives are available to answer any contractual queries and will assist you in resolving contractual disputes. You can access our Collective Agreement on this site or contact the PAIRN office for a printed booklet.

Salary Scales PAIRN members receive the following salaries (see sidebar) in accordance with the appointed level of training. Postgraduate Medical Studies are those years after you obtain your MD when you are training as a Resident

u Eastern Health

Eastern Health is a Regional Integrated Health Authority operating under the umbrella of the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association (NLHBA). NLHBA negotiates collective agreements with PAIRN on behalf of Eastern Health and the provincial government.

The role of Eastern Health is to act as the employer of residents in the postgraduate medical education program at Memorial University. It also ensures that PAIRN members are employed within the terms and conditions of the Collective Agreement and the policies of the teaching hospitals.

u Department of Health and Community Services

Memorial University is directly accountable to the Department of Health and Community Services. The Department approves funding for the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association for the number of salaried posts in each of the postgraduate medical education programs. Each resident receives a bursary from the Department in the amount of $500 to offset the cost of tuition. It also approves the terms and conditions relating to the recruitment of individuals within those programs.
