Potential Members

During your residency program you will work with enthusiastic faculty members and community preceptors who are committed to giving you the best learning experience possible.

There will also be many educational experiences that have been developed to compliment your present knowledge and skills.

Hands-on training at state-of-the-art health care facilities in Newfoundland and Labrador will prepare you for the realities of practice and challenge you as you become more capable as a physician.

Becoming a PAIRN Member You are automatically a PAIRN member if you are a medical Resident training in Newfoundland and Labrador. You will need to register with the PAIRN office upon your arrival to Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Finding a School Residents are matched with medical schools for postgraduate medical training using an electronic application service provided by the Canadian Resident Matching Service. The Canadian Resident Matching Service is a not-for-profit organization that works in close cooperation with medical schools and students to provide a computer match for entry into postgraduate medical training throughout Canada. The service, also known as CaRMS, allows applicants to request where they want to train and allows program directors to decide which applicants they wish to enroll in postgraduate medical training.

Registration The Postgraduate Medical Studies Office at Memorial University registers new Residents during the first week of July. Once registered, the Postgraduate Office will notify you regarding fees owing and payment methods.

The Postgraduate Office must have verification that you are registered and that you have an educational license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador prior to July 1st or you will be unable to assume your clinical duties.

Applying for Educational Licensure The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador is the regulatory body for all physicians in the province. They issue certificates of registration to all doctors to allow them to practice medicine. When you enroll in Postgraduate Medical Studies you will receive an application package from the College to be registered on its Educational Register and to obtain a provisional license.

Applying for Canadian Medical Protective Insurance The CMPA is a mutual defense organization for physicians who practice in Canada. You must have CMPA coverage before starting residency or you will be unable to assume your clinical duties.

Your employer will pay the full cost of the annual premium for CMPA malpractice insurance. Residents will have to submit their Expense Claim Form 1 to the Postgraduate Medical Studies Office along with proof of receipt indicating payment in full.

u International Medical Graduates

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are seeking Postgraduate Medical Education at Memorial University must have Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant status.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador requires IMGs to complete the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE) before entrance to the MCCQE, except if you hold a diploma from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the U.S.A. All IMGs must be graduates from a medical school that has been approved and listed in the World Health Organization list of medical schools or with FAIMER.
